Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Some Covent Garden Statistics
- The population is currently between 6,000 and 6,500 people.
- There are approximately 2800 dwellings.
- The CG area covers approximately 100 acres; it is bounded by Strand, Kingsway, High Holborn, New Oxford Street, Charing Cross Road.
- In 1999 we counted: 102 Bars and Public Houses, 127 Restaurants, 127 Sandwich Bars and Cafés, 21 Theatres, 12 Hotels & Conference Centres, 11 Clubs, 11 Off-licences, and 1 Cinema in Covent Garden (if we count theatres on boundary roads, there are 25 in total).
- The area is split approximately a third Camden, two thirds Westminster;
- The population is divided equally between the two, so more densely residential in Camden.
- The area is (was!!) a famous example of a successful mixed-use area, with lots of retail, restaurants, bars/pubs, theatres/museums/entertainment, offices, light industrial and residential, including a large proportion of social/affordable housing, side-by-side; this fragile balance has been lost to the entertainment industry and the 24-hour economy.
- Licensing excesses are starting to have a harmful effect on the 2 conservation areas (character of the area) and on other commercial uses, including offices and theatres.
- CG has an above-average percentage of elderly residents, many living in social housing.
- There are more than 750 hostel bedspaces located within CG.
