Neighbourhood Watch

How can the simple act of taking a photograph help to break down some of the social barriers that exist in our day to day lives? Five young people aged 13 - 16 years living at Vale Royal House in central London set out with artist Frances Kearney and their youth workers to find out the answer to this question.

The group concentrated on snapping portraits of their neighbours and other people working in the local area, including Eddie and Jason (vendors of The Big Issue, a magazine for homeless people), Colin McDermott (who greets diners at the door of The Ivy restaurant), Chris Williams (at The Venue, a club near Leicester Square) and Jenny Cheung (from the Chinese Gift Shop, in Chinatown). They also discussed the subject matter, style and approach of other artists and photographers, including Frances Kearney, Garry Winogrand, Gordon Parks, Diane Arbus and August Sander. Confidence and skills grew during the after-school sessions, revealing a wealth of talent within the group.

Visit the gallery throughout June and July 2000 and see if you're featured!
