Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Nutopia
New concept in Internet access and new media opens in Covent Garden.
London's first 'Cyber Lounge' has opened in Shelton Street, Covent Garden. The modern and sophisticated interior gives visitors a sense of calm and relaxation, in addition to state-of-the-art Internet access, coffee and a public art space and gallery. It certainly lifts Nutopia one step above the rest of London's cyber cafés and Internet access shops.
The front of the premises houses 'Launchpad', a showcase for designers using new technology, with a light-emitting sofa and a chromastrobic light display. Some large sofas and tables and two large fish tanks create a relaxing environment.
The rear of the premises houses a bank of 40 Internet terminals, using low-radiation Apple monitors and a very fast high-capacity Internet connection.
According to its owners, Grant Mitchell and George Philippakos, the premises create "the illusion of being submerged in a pool of tropical water". They have taken great care to refurbish the shop into a very comfortable and stylish outfit, with aquamarine lighting being diffused through translucent walls and reflecting off the high gloss surfaces.
Further exhibitions, including various robots and futuristic displays, have already been planned. The official launch party will be held on Wednesday 16th February 2000 at 18:30 hrs.
The shop is normally open each day between 10:00-22:00 hrs.
Admission to the premises, including the Launchpad exhibition area, is FREE.
Internet charges vary and start at £1.
