Louis Green

Louis Green

A familiar face in Covent Garden for the past 25 years will be missed. Louis Green, who lived in Earlham House, Mercer Street, passed away earlier this year.

Louis' involvement with the local community can be traced back to the 70s, when he was actively involved with the Covent Garden Forum of Representatives. Louis took a great interest in planning applications and would often recall some of the earlier achievements. Both Louis and Mrs Green stood their ground against late-night bars and places of entertainment around Seven Dials.

During his last few years, Louis found it difficult to get out and about. After a fall in the East End, he walked with a stick and, occasionally, a Zimmer frame. Despite his limited mobility, he managed most of his own affairs, bought his newspaper and went to the bank or post office.

The highlight of Louis' social calendar was always the annual pensioners' Christmas party in the Community Centre. Whilst his legs were not always co-operative, Louis' voice most certainly was and he would always lead the singing, even at 92!

Louis had a soft spot for the Phoenix Community Garden. He could often be found there, enjoying the sunshine and the birds. He kindly paid for a beautiful garden bench, which bears his name and is situated in his favourite spot.

His kindness and generosity have left a lasting impression on the local community. Louis even remembered his beloved community in his will, leaving £1000 to both the CGCA and the Covent Garden Community Centre.

He is missed by his friend Bridget, neighbours, friends and the CGCA.
