Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Peabody Estate Wild Street Tenants Association
Our forthcoming Golden Jubilee party has not deflected the Committee from their responsibilities towards the members and at our recent Annual General Meeting Dr Justin Claxton outlined the facilities for Information Technology instruction in the training rooms at Bruce House that are available for Trust tenants.
Our Housing Manager, Valerie, raised a number of points especially some of the problem areas: illegal sub-letting (both of flats and car parking spaces), dumping of refrigerators (which should be referred to Westminster City Council for removal), rough sleepers, lack of sufficient porter coverage and so on.
But all is not 'doom and gloom'. On the brighter side, two blocks are having their worn stairs re-levelled; enhanced block lighting in the hallways and staircases has started in D Block and this work should be completed on the whole of the Estate before the long winter nights close in; the previously derelict space outside A Block on Wild Street has been planted with trees and shrubs and negotiations are in hand between the Trust and the City Lit for secondary glazing to be fitted to the flats opposite the site, when construction of the new City Lit buildings in Keeley Street commences.
Planning for the Estate's celebrations of the Queen's Golden Jubilee is going ahead at speed. Purchase of suitable bunting, printing of the programme of events for 1st June, procurement of commemorative T shirts (with portrait of Her Majesty and the Trust logo), booking of band and entertainers and all the other things that have to be done to make the day a success have kept the members of the Association Committee busy.
We wish the Community Association well for the next year and thank them for their efforts to ensure that our neighbourhood is a pleasant environment in which to live.
Stan Sheriff, Chair
