Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Winter Garden House Residents' Association
Since the completion of our XRD Scheme (Exterior Repairs & Decoration) and getting the scaffolding taken down from around our building, we have endeavoured to keep Winter Garden House in good order and looking as smart as possible. But just as we thought all was well, yet more nearby building work is taking place and we are once again surrounded by cranes and trucks, and all the accompanying noise and mess. It is interesting to note that Macklin Street, once one of the most disreputable streets in London, is fast becoming the site of some of the most expensive property in the area.
We continue to make efforts to improve the vicinity. After the success of getting a pedestrian crossing installed nearby in Drury Lane, we would now like to see the tree replaced on the corner of Macklin Street and Drury Lane. It would be lovely to see a tree instead of the increasing piles of unsightly rubbish. It is hard to believe (and very frustrating after so many requests) that a solution cannot be found to solve the problem of having the frontage of our building used as a general rubbish dumping ground.
A proposal to have our podium (3rd floor) made into a garden/patio area for the use of residents has been put forward. A number of volunteers have offered to maintain such a scheme, and we are applying for approval (and funds) from Camden Council to go ahead with the idea.
Earlier this year we were delighted to congratulate our oldest tenant, Margaret Rowland, on her 100th birthday. Margaret is a well-loved resident of Covent Garden and many of her friends and relatives attended her celebration party. She was delighted with her letter from the Queen (though disappointed it had not been signed personally), a beautiful bouquet from the Mayor of Camden .... and her very own article on the CGCA website! Any belated congratulations sent via the on-line form on the website will be passed to Margaret.
We were sorry to lose Ken Peters and Cathy Peters (Chair and Committee Member) when they moved away from the area earlier this year, and we wish them every happiness in their new home. Our new Chairman is John Knight, esteemed musician, violinist of the City of Westminster Trio. John and his fellow musicians are planning to give a recital later in the year for people living and working in Covent Garden, with proceeds going to the CGCA.
Again, we wish to express our thanks to the CGCA for its support throughout the year, and send best wishes for its continued success.
