Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Westminster Councillors
Another year passes and we are invited to contribute once again to the CGCA Annual Report. We are glad to do so and looking at past reports are reminded of the central and yet diverse role played by the CGCA and its individual members in the life of Covent Garden. There are, in our view, no head gardeners in Covent Garden, rather a cosmopolitan community of individuals, families, businesses and community groups who all care deeply about the preservation, amenity and enhancement of the area. We are happy to include ourselves in this community. No community should turn in on itself regardless of the pressures it faces. However, Covent Garden does face enormous pressures, particularly in the realms of entertainment, licensing and public/residential amenity and we are both committed to working with the CGCA and others to try and keep these dangerous trends in check.
We were saddened to note the enforced departure of Peter Scutt from the Central Market. His contribution and commitment to the whole life of Covent Garden over many years cannot be overstated and we are sure that he will remain a familiar face in the area. The Royal Opera House nears completion but those of us who serve the community on the Community Liaison Group (CLG) are anxious to ensure that the dialogue between the House and the rest of the community forged by the CLG continues. Alexander, serving on Westminster's Unitary Development Plan Committee, continues to press for better safeguards for local residents in the new plan before the character and diversity of Covent Garden is swept away by the growing tide of A3 and licence applications allowed or lost on appeal. The fight shall and will continue and we acknowledge the crucial work of the CGCA in this and other areas.
Councillors Louise Hyams & Alexander Nicoll, St James' Ward
