Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Holborn Police
The past year has been a difficult year for Holborn - and for many other police divisions also - with significant new legislative changes, reductions in personnel levels, and greater than ever demand for police services. In addition we have had to deal with a degree of displacement from 'Operation Gridiron' and other initiatives launched by our better resourced neighbours in Westminster.
The current year will bring further challenges with the amalgamation of the three divisions of Holborn, Kentish Town and Hampstead into a single Operational Command Unit for Camden, and with the move out of Holborn for 18 months while the building is given a significant overhaul.
Against this background we have tried to provide a responsive service to deal with persistent problems, including those in the Covent Garden area. Maximising the effect of our limited resources is the name of the game. Our licensing department has been enhanced to good effect, and 'Business Against Crime' and the South Bloomsbury Strategy Panel are beginning to harness major enterprises who can work with both police and the local authority to impact on crime and improve quality of life for all. A major operation was launched against retail crime in the run up to Christmas featuring the now famous 'courier cops' who have appeared on London Weekend Television and in both the local and national press. Lastly, Covent Garden now has it's own working group with Holborn police.
However, the undoubted highlight of the year was the December 1st raid on the 'Backbeat Club' in Denmark Place (unless you happened to be one of those kept awake all night by the police helicopter!). This was the largest armed operation conducted to date in the UK and led to 45 arrests and the seizure of large quantities of drugs and cash, as well as removing permanently a haven for drugs and crime.
