Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Covent Garden Community Centre
The Covent Garden Community Centre is located in Earlham Street and has access that is suitable for those who have to rely on the use of wheelchairs.
The aim of the Centre is to provide social, educational and recreational facilities for those living, and working, in the Covent Garden Conservation Area. Many of the local people are in the elderly or very young age groups. We aim to provide a friendly meeting place in a warm and safe environment where residents and workers can meet on a social level and participate in activities of their choice.
Throughout the year we work with all age groups, focusing particularly on the elderly and the young, by providing a wide range of activities for their enjoyment and benefit. Events for the adults include keep fit classes, bingo sessions, food co-op, outings to sea-side towns and to horse race meetings. The children are catered for by our pre-school playgroup which has sessions for one group in the mornings and for another during the afternoons, parent and toddlers group, the Urdang Academy ballet & tap dance classes and holiday playschemes.
The Covent Garden Area Youth Club at present meet in the Centre on two evenings a week whilst awaiting a permanent meeting venue. We also work with other organisations, who make use of the Centre facilities, such as the Workers Music Association Singers, Cantonese Language School, Tenants and Local Housing Associations and like organisations.
Additionally there are one-off organised events such as exhibitions, bazaars, dances and social evenings. The hall is open for hire and is a popular venue for birthday parties and wedding receptions.
Mention should be made of the Seven Dials Club which is closely allied to the Community Centre which it substantially funds. The Club provides a friendly and relaxed meeting place where members can enjoy the usual facilities of a social club and the many indoor pursuits provided such as chess, pool, darts, dominoes and like indoor games. The Club has entered the In and Around Covent Garden annual 5-a-side soccer competition since its inception.
The membership fees are deliberately kept low as many of the residents are on low income or a pension. The fees for the coming year, up to 30 April 2000, are: Full (residents of the Conservation Area) £12, Associate (those who live outside the Conservation Area) £16 and all Senior Citizens £3.
For further information please call any member of the management committee or the staff on (0207) 240 0443.
