Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Covent Garden Business Watch
Business Watch continues to be a valuable crime-fighting tool and information exchange in our area. Soon to be enhanced by Pub Watch, it will enable relevant information about crime and public order threats to be 'flagged up' to the retail and leisure sectors.
The pager system continues to be the most efficient and cost-effective means of passing information, descriptions and incident reports to our Watch members and has the advantage that it is able to 'store' information which can be used as evidential material.
While the police make every effort to respond to every call for assistance and actively to seek to prevent and detect crime, this cannot be done in isolation. However much that Holborn does, it falls to our members in the Watch Schemes, and to the community at large, to work with us.
The Community Action Team (CAT) at Holborn and Business Watch have devised a series of training seminars which can be delivered either in all-day sessions or in modular form. 'Best Evidence Training', and on-site modular sessions on 'Powers of Detention, Search and Arrest', 'Plastic Card Fraud', 'Conflict Management', etc are some of the topics. With such training and with active member participation, convictions can be gained and a warning posted to thieves, fraudsters and other criminal predators that Covent Garden is 'hostile territory'.
A Civil Recovery pilot in the area, enabling retailers, publicans and employers to sue in the Civil Court for redress in respect of monetary loss caused by shop-thieves or employees may be implemented in the late Summer.
The Police and Business Watch are very conscious of serving a whole and integrated community and seek your response and active participation in our activities. If you require information on any matter please ring Mike Marlow, Business Watch Co-ordinator, on (0207) 209 1649.
