Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Business Group
The principal aim of the Covent Garden Business Group is to give an opportunity to local businesses to have a voice in local matters and to encourage them to take an interest in environmental and residential matters, as well as commercial ones.
Many businesses may be environmentally friendly now, but with the pressure on the area to accommodate more and more people in entertainment venues, there is now evidence that more businesses realise what is at stake. Already retailers and offices are experiencing the effects of over-licensing. Even though people who work in businesses may not be around late at night, they still bear witness the following morning to the results of unsocial behaviour caused by excessive drinking: the stench of urine and excreta in doorways and minor damage to premises and property. The residents have not only this to put up with, but rowdy behaviour right through the night. Indeed, the residential and business communities have never before had so much in common and have much to gain from working together; that is what the Business Group is all about.
The problem we face in the Business Group is that our resources are severely limited and, as a result, we do not always have the manpower to offer as full a service to our members as we would wish. Nevertheless, we are committed to getting the business community to join us in our quest to preserve Covent Garden as a place still worth visiting and with a rich and varied choice of businesses to come and spend money in. To do this we must succeed in enlisting further committed business members willing to take an active interest in the community. This year, four members of the CGCA's Executive Committee have business interests in the area, some are also residents. We cannot emphasise the importance of the businesses working in harmony with the residential community, but we need help to reach our full potential.
The CGCA has enormous influence in the area with its 27 year history of preserving and enhancing Covent Garden - without the past efforts of the CGCA in conserving the area, many of the present businesses would not wish to be here in the first place. The business community must harness this influence for the betterment of all. If you have a business in Covent Garden and are interested in taking an active part in our Business Group, please contact us on Tel (0207) 209 2515.
- The problems facing us here are numerous:
- the possible closure of Covent Garden Underground station
- aggressive begging
- shoplifting/retail crime, mugging and bag snatching
- excessive rent increases and the subsequent loss of specialist traders
- deliveries, parking and through-traffic
- electricity power cuts
- terrorism and area closures.
There is much to do and much to gain from doing it. We must keep on seeking solutions to the many problems and we look forward to hearing your suggestions. Please do join our Business Group if you have not already done so.
