June 1999The CGCA's 28th AGM was held in the offices of the Design Council, Bow Street; more than 140 people attended and Finton O'Toole gave a very interesting lecture on Richard Sheridan. The Executive Committee discusses CGCA future and a development plan at its first 'away day'. JulyMidnight walk-about with Home Office and DETR officials. Appeal hearing for 3am Music & Dancing licence: Magistrate allows the appeal, despite 120 objections. AugustThe warm weather turns Covent Garden into one large alfresco drinking area, regularly blocking all pavements. CGCA meets with two of the major breweries to negotiate limited drinking areas. Gallery of old Market photos launched on CGCA website to mark the 25th anniversary of the Market moving from Covent Garden. SeptemberHuge fire sweeps through Seven Dials Warehouse. CGCA makes detailed comments on two Home Office licensing deregulation papers. We meet with Cllr Arthur, Leader of Camden Council, to make the case for a 24-hour noise team in Camden. Very successful CGCA benefit concert at St Paul's Church raises almost £1000. Well-attended public meeting of Westminster amenity groups calls for a halt on West End crime and late-night noise. OctoberA thoughtful resident makes a generous donation specifically for a much-needed new computer. CGCA meets with Shaftesbury plc, a major landowner in Covent Garden. Camden and Westminster consider the results of their first joint traffic study and decide to shelve the plans. NovemberCamden, Westminster and the Police organise a successful joint-operation to seize illegal street traders. Westminster Council consults on its proposals for the 'management of the entertainment industry'. The CGCA starts a major fund-raising drive to stave off closure in January. |
DecemberCGCA office hours restricted to spend more time on fund-raising. The monthly meetings of the Hospital community liaison group commence. Planning applications for Holborn Town Hall bring the community facility much closer; various meetings with Camden result. January 2000No millennium bugs to be seen anywhere, just rivers of urine, mountains of rubbish and millions of people on New Year's Day. Large local public house appeals against a condition that it's noise should not be audible in any adjacent buildings-the perfect example of good neighbourliness! FebruaryMore than 120 questionnaires returned by members to help CGCA plan its future. Soho Housing Association opens a major new housing scheme in Covent Garden; only 3 local families housed. MarchCGCA arranges meeting with Camden Police to demand more visible policing. We organise a very successful public meeting in the New Connaught Rooms about the joint traffic proposals for Covent Garden; more than 140 people attend. AprilThe Home Office publishes its long awaited 'white paper' on licensing. Westminster Council strengthens its UDP policies to resist A3 and late-night uses; too little, too late. MayLondon is shocked by brutal murder of 12 year old Covent Garden boy at Seven Dials. Immediate response by Police and Camden Council to clean-up the Seven Dials and St Giles area. The Covent Garden May Fayre takes place as usual, this year with blazing sunshine - almost £700 was taken on the CGCA jumble stall! |
