Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
This report should have come from Carl Wonfor, our ex-chair, but he is up in the Rockies playing Mounted Policeman. The youth club has had a mixed bag of fortunes again this year and the committee feels they have had to start from scratch. We have employed two new workers: Julie Begum, Senior Youth Worker and Anthony Gentle, Youth Worker. They have had to start from the beginning with lots of outreach work - going round local estates meeting the young people and building relationships with the young people as they start to return to the youth club.
Julie and Anthony are enthusiastic and keen to organise as many activities as possible and this includes outside activities, such as ice skating, bowling and maybe even a weekend away - so watch this space.
We are still in need of permanent premises and this causes a great deal of frustration for the committee, workers and mostly the young people, as it would be great to have a space they can call their own (this sounds like a line from a song!) But seriously, this is a long, ongoing problem and to be honest, unless we find a more suitable venue, this problem will stay with us forever. Westminster are still funding the youth club and this goes towards salaries and rent for the space and we are constantly looking at other organisations that can fund us for one-off projects such as trips, etc. We have been very fortunate in this respect to have received money from the Seven Dials Lodge for such trips, together with other funds from Lodges and local businesses such as Doc Martens.
Permanent space and continued funding will always be issues the Management Committee have to deal with, but what we are also looking for is more local involvement from parents, young people and businesses. So, if you are interested please contact either myself or Lynn Harrison at Charing Cross Police Station.
