This year the Garden has, under the enthusiastic endeavours of our dedicated gardener Barbara Holliman, received many well-deserved compliments - and it has not been an easy twelve months to keep the Phoenix Garden looking so beautiful. The Garden has unfortunately been on the receiving end of countless acts of mindless vandalism, theft and drug abuse. However, we have been very fortunate in having not only a committed, hardworking gardener and committee, but the continued support of Camden Council, the John Paul Getty Trust and of The William Shelton Educational Foundation. Together, with quick responses from Holborn Police Station, we are working, against the odds, to ensure that the garden is fit for our children and community.

Due to the ageing of the garden's stage area and play equipment, its lack of toilet facilities and insecure boundary fencing, the committee decided against holding the Annual Summer Play-scheme this year. The decision was taken with respect to the health and safety of the children. Although unsuccessful in our application to the Lottery Board for the children's play area, we are going to improve the garden's facilities this coming year; from 'planning gain' monies the boundary fence along Stacey Street will be renewed and made secure, and with a generous donation from garden visitor Ms Honor Vine, we will be replacing the stage. This building work will be undertaken during the coming summer and we are planning to hold the next play-scheme in a much revitalised and secure garden.

Meanwhile the Garden continues to look more spectacular as each month passes and is well worth a visit to receive a moment's tranquillity from the noise, pollution and hurly-burly of West End reality. We aspire to make our committee as representative as possible and would welcome more people to become involved with the Phoenix Garden. We take this opportunity to thank the CGCA for its continued vigilance in the area and the individuals that give time and money to support the Garden - without all your help we couldn't do it!
