Covent Garden traffic proposals
|
Public meeting in New Connaught Rooms a great success. The public meeting to highlight the joint-proposals by Westminster and Camden councils to reduce through-traffic in Covent Garden was held in the Grand Hall at the New Connaught Rooms on Wednesday 29th March. Speakers from Camden and Westminster described the scheme and answered questions from business owners and residents. More than 140 people attended and were given a map and some back-ground information about the scheme. Camden Council is very keen to implement the scheme, as it sees the proposals as a natural follow-up from its 'Clear Zone' proposals. Westminster City Council is very cautious about any traffic-related proposals, following the partial reversal of its much criticised handling of the Soho traffic scheme earlier this month. The meeting was chaired by Jim Monahan, CGCA's Vice-Chairman (2nd from left on the platform). Camden's traffic engineer Doug Amer (1st on the left) spoke in detail about Camden's forward-looking ideas and proposals. Carl Powell, Westminster's Director of Planning & Transportation (3rd from left) described the problems of the Soho traffic scheme in detail and told the meeting about the problems that Westminster wants to avoid if the Covent Garden scheme goes ahead. The CGCA is very grateful to the management of the New Connaught Rooms for hosting our meeting for free and for providing such superb meeting facilities. For more information on the traffic proposals, please see the back-ground information, map and previous articles.
