Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Neal Street Festival - 28th July 2001
The CGCA's first street festival for more than 15 years was a huge success. On a day with temperatures in the UK higher than on the Canary Islands and even Hawaii, Neal Street, Earlham Street and Short's Gardens were the scene of Covent Garden's biggest joint birthday party this year.
Almost 60 stalls, stilt walkers, a teddy bears circus, Indian drummers, a sculptor, Nepalese dancers, Police and Fire Brigade demonstrations, Punch & Judy performances, lots of food and drink and a mix of local residents and visitors helped to celebrate the 30th birthday of the Covent Garden Community Association and the 50th birthday of the Punjab Restaurant.
The atmosphere throughout the day was superb. A lively schedule of entertainment and attractions made this day the highlight of the CGCA's celebrations during 2001. The various stalls, including a huge bric-a-brac sale, a bottle stall and a cold drinks stall, helped to raise much needed funds for the Association.
The event could not have taken place without the help of the many volunteers who turned out, including many local residents and a team from GO London. The CGCA also wishes to thank the many individuals and companies that donated their time, energy, food, drink and money to the event.
