Neal Street and the surrounding area will host the CGCA's 30th birthday party on Saturday 28th July 2001.

The last CGCA street festival took place a long time ago (at least 15 years) and this time we have the best possible excuse for a street festival: we're 30. Neal Street, part of Earlham Street and part of Short's Gardens will be transformed into a lively community festival.

There will be stalls, a Food Fair, Indian dancers and artists, a jazz band, stilt walkers, Indian musicians, Punch & Judy, games & competitions, etc. The CGCA will also be raising much-needed funds by selling white elephants, second-hand books, clothes and household goods.

The fun will start at 11am and the stalls will be out until 6pm. Weather permitting, there will be various information stalls by local charities, the local Council and the CGCA itself. A Festival stage will be erected at the end of Neal Street, near the junction with Monmouth Street. Soho Fire Station will be in attendance with a real fire engine, smoke detectors, advice and information. The Police will also be represented, with officers of both Project Lilac and the local 'beat officers' joining the fun.

Please check here for more information and a time-table of events, nearer the 28th. The Festival will also celebrate the fact that the Punjab Restaurant, one of London's oldest Indian restaurants, has been in Neal Street (at nr 80) for 50 years, and that Frank's Café (at nr 52) has been Covent Garden's best and most-loved traditional café for 25 years.

If you would like to get involved, please contacts us ASAP. We urgently need volunteers to run our 'jumble' stall, sell cold drinks, run our information stall, hand out programmes, etc. We also need at least 20 stewards, who will be briefed and issued with armbands and clip-boards, and who will keep an eye on health & safety matters, unlicensed street traders and disorder throughout the day. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH IF YOU CAN HELP ON THE 28th.

Please keep the 28th July free in your diary now and bring your friends and neighbours along!
