Attend the public meeting at the Urdang Academy, 20 Shelton street, WC2 on 12th March 2003 at 7:00pm, and hear the Mercers' proposals. All welcome.
The Covent Garden Community Association requires your help to stop this planning application. We are lobbying to retain these unique historic buildings all within the conservation area and see them restored sensitively. We believe the commercial success of Covent Garden is based on active conservation of our built heritage.
Together with local residents, the Seven Dials Charity & Camden Council we persuaded developers of no. 25 Shelton Street to substitute a restoration scheme for demolition.
The CGCA opposes the current proposals by the Mercers because,
- The proposal shows an unacceptable amount of demolition to existing buildings & fabric in the conservation area - overall 60% to go!
- The scheme proposes no architectural, social or community benefit
- The application includes a massive increase in retail and speculative office buildings - making Covent Garden the same as any high street
- Existing residents in Mercer Street & Long Acre will be swamped by new commercial developments & no new affordable housing will be included
- The Urdang Dance Academy, a key cultural activity in this area, is to be evicted from Shelton street after 25 years there
- The scheme proposes a new street linking Mercer & Langley Street - this only serves to increase the retail units & it will increase social problems
- The existing streets are too narrow to host large retail units, restaurants and dense office buildings. The quiet nature of these streets should be kept not destroyed
