Covent Garden hero delights local crowds

The 28th Annual General Meeting of the Covent Garden Community Association was held on Tue 13th June 2000 in the Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

The meeting was attended by more than 250 people, the majority of whom were CGCA members. Others had been attracted by the evening's guest speaker, Sam Mendes. The meeting was chaired by John Moulton, a former CGCA Executive member, who ensured that all business was dealt with swiftly and properly.

Jo Weir was re-elected unopposed as Chairman of the CGCA for 2000-2001 and the following were elected as Executive Committee members:

Jim Monahan, Sital Maan, Michael Wylde, James Tait, Ria Higgins, Edward de Mesquita, Robert Saunders, Douglas Rose, Patricia Moynagh.

After the business part of the meeting, Sam Mendes spoke with wit and passion about his film 'American Beauty' and his work at the Donmar Warehouse Theatre in Covent Garden.

Sam lamented the loss of the traditional 'corner store', the changing character of neighbourhoods in the light of the homogenisation of life. He answered a number of questions from the public and his views on the role of live theatre were both interesting and encouraging.

Sadly, the Evening Standard put circulation figures before accuracy and facts (again) and published a highly inaccurate account of Sam’s comments.

After the meeting, a huge buffet, generously provided by Sarastro's Restaurant, together with copious amounts of wine, beer and soft drinks from One Aldwych, Tuttons Brasserie and Maxwell's Restaurants, went down a treat with CGCA members and guests.

A very interesting and enjoyable time was had by all and, after much persuasion, the crowds finally left the Opera House by 22:30 hrs.
