Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
Taking it for granted...
The CGCA relies for almost a quarter of its income on an annual grant from each of the two local authorities. Each year, detailed application forms are completed to demonstrate how the CGCA benefits Camden and Westminster residents. Each year, after a nail-biting waiting period, grants for the next financial year are announced.
The good news this year is that Camden Council has granted the CGCA an amount equal to last year’s grant plus 2.5% inflation. Camden also pay for the CGCA’s rent on its office premises and for the Business Rates on the premises. This all mounts up to a princely sum and the CGCA is most grateful for this substantial support.
The bad, sad and disappointing news is that Westminster City Council has reduced the (already very small) grant to the CGCA even further. Voluntary organisations across Westminster had their grants reduced or completely cut in the latest cost-saving round at City Hall. Despite very strong support from both ward Councillors, who have first-hand experience of what good value-for-money the CGCA provides, budgets were cut to enable Westminster to keep its Council tax low. All very well, until you need to use a service and realise it no longer exists or provides the service you depend on...
