Free smoke detector for residents 'at risk'
The Covent Garden Community Association (CGCA) and Soho Fire Station have developed a project to assist households at risk from fire in the home. Smoke detectors are being offered free-of-charge to all elderly residents in Covent Garden. Fire officers will arrange for demonstrations on the benefits and correct use of the detectors, and the CGCA will arrange for fitting.
After the detectors have been received with full instructions and a free battery, the CGCA will arrange a convenient time to fit them. Volunteers working with the CGCA will then test the detectors after fitting the detector and answer any questions the residents may have about how to use it. In 11 months time the resident will be contacted to arrange a time for the battery in the detector to be changed. The entire service is free of charge - the Fire Brigade provide the detectors for free and the CGCA gets them fitted for free.
The second phase of the project will be to provide free smoke detectors to families with young children. The CGCA will be working with the two local primary schools to arrange for demonstrations and fire awareness material. This project is due to start during 2001.
If you are interested in receiving a free smoke detector or have any questions about fire safety, please contact the CGCA. We will pass your queries on to the appropriate officer at Soho Fire Station.
