Firefighters raise £38,000 for WTC victims
Following the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York on 11th September 2001, firefighters from Soho Fire Station in Shaftesbury Avenue, central London, began fundraising for the widows and orphans of the New York firefighters who lost their lives at the incident.
The firefighters arranged events which included a "fire-engine pull" along Oxford Street, as well as street collections at various locations across the West End.
The New York Fire Department lost 343 firefighters in the attacks at the WTC, the bodies of many of the firefighters have still not been recovered.
On the six month anniversary of the disaster, Firefighters from Soho Fire Station in Shaftesbury Avenue presented a commemorative plaque to their colleagues at the Soho Firehouse in Manhattan.
The trip to New York was self funded, and the plaque was paid for by the London crews.
The Soho Truck Company in Manhattan lost 14 firefighters at the WTC. There are close bonds between the two Soho fire stations, and it is hoped that the links will be strengthened in the future to provide ongoing moral support for the firefighters and the families who were so tragically affected by the events of September 11th.
The Firefighters from Soho managed to raise £38,000 for the New York Firefighter's appeal. The firefighters would like to say a very big thank-you to all those people who live and work in the West End who made donations to the appeal.
