The English National Opera has plans to begin a four-year refurbishment costing upwards of £41m. Nearly £24m will be aided from lottery money.

The end result will be the restored original decor as well as two new bars and improved public space. Also, the backstage and orchestra areas will be improved. For extra comfort there will be a better air-conditioning system installed and the audience will be able to enter from the main entrance. After all of this refurbishment The Coliseum, the largest theatre in London, will again be restored to its former splendour.

The Coliseum was designed by architect Frank Matcham who is also known for his designs of the Hackney Empire, the arcades in Leeds, and the Hippodrome on Charing Cross Road. Since it was built 96 years ago, it has been home to a variety theatre, American musicals, and a cinema. Latterly is has been the nation's hotbed for top quality opera and ballet.

Throughout the work for the upcoming improvements The Coliseum will continue to present a full season of opera.
