Long awaited and much deserved awards for local waiters
Two Covent Garden waiters have recently been acknowledged for saving a boy's life by forcing a knife-wielding man to the ground after he had stabbed another child to death. The award ceremony took place last week, after an investigation into the handling of the case by Police, social workers and a magistrate had delayed the award.
The child, Diego Pineiro-Villar, 12, who lived with his mother at Cambridge Circus, was being stalked by Crowley and died after being stabbed 30 times during the attack in Earlham Street, Covent Garden, in May last year. The actions of Anwar Ali Khan, 26, and Sheikh Salim, 27, almost certainly saved the life of Diego's half-brother, 15-year-old Roberto, who was also attacked by Edward Crowley, 53.
Anwar said: "It was later on in the evening that we found out that Diego hadn't made it because he was so badly hurt. "Every day I think if only we were there two minutes earlier then maybe we could have done something to change things. But at that time it was the best we could do and you've got to tell yourself that Roberto was involved as well and our intervention helped to save him. For these awards to come out of the whole incident, it is just one of the biggest honours I've ever had, and a once in a lifetime experience. I'm really glad to be here."
Crowley carried out the killing after becoming obsessed with the boy and with the works of his own namesake, mystic and writer Aleister Edward Crowley. Crowley, who had a long history of mental illness, refused to accept Diego's desire to end their friendship. He was charged with harassment after the boy's family complained that he had been stalking Diego but he was later released on bail.
However, on 7 May 2000, Crowley found Diego alone with Roberto in Covent Garden and stabbed him. He has since been jailed for life at the Old Bailey.
