2.1 Central Registrar 2.1 CENTRAL REGISTRARThere has been a Central Registrar for all births, deaths and marriages since 1837. Searches can be made in person. Out of office hours: 641 6000. A baby's birth must be registered within forty-two days. Deaths must be registered within five days. Present the death certificate provided by the doctor attending the death, the hospital or by a coroner (through the police). Death and Funeral grants are available. Widows may be entitled to additional allowances, including widows pension and widowed mothers allowance; seek advice from your DSS office (see 1.2). Once a date has been set, the Registrar is contacted for availability and to conduct the ceremony, for which there is a charge of £150-180 depending on the day required. If you are a member of the Church of England, your marriage, including the Licence, can be arranged at your Parish Church, listed in Chapter Ten. For most other denominations, a Licence and the legal form of marriage must be held at a Registrar's offices or other premises licensed for marriages which do not have to be in the area where you live.
