The Hogshead

The Hogshead
The Hogshead

Fancy a pub with a traditional feel, friendly staff, a wide range of selected ales, a large variety of delicious food and a wonderful place to host private parties? The Hogshead at the corner of Wellington and Exeter can offer you all of this and much more.

The Hogshead has remained at its same location since 1792, when it was known as the Old Bell. Since then it has changed name a few times, but not it's genuine character and friendly feel.

This unique pub has a lot to offer its varied clientele ranging from office/business workers, tourists, families and pre-theatre and orchestra goers. It has the largest range of cask ales available in the area. On tap there are always four regular ales as well as four changing guest ales which bring guests returning again and again. There are also many opportunities throughout the year to celebrate different festivals and theme months ranging from Octoberfest to the 18 featured wines available in February. The bar staff will never turn down a request for a taste test of your favourite, or soon to be favourite, brew or wine.

Yet another enticing reason to visit the Hogshead is it's extremely varied and large menu of delicious food. Whether it be for a quick bite at lunch or a more relaxing dinner in the upstairs dining area, this menu has something to offer almost everyone. For starters one could begin with lovely cheesy, spicy nachos or a bowl of freshly prepared soup of the day. Then moving on to the main dish one could always opt for the traditional fish and chips, sausage and mash, or baked pie, or being a little more adventurous try tempting your buds with the Thai red chicken curry or spinach and mushroom lasagne. There is also a surprisingly large array of vegetarian choices to satisfy the veggie diners. Dishes such as the 'Bubble and Squeak' which is a tantalising mashed potato and cabbage patty, pan fried and topped with fresh roasted vegetables and a fried egg may just even tempt the most avid carnivore.

And you private party throwers and goers you will not be disappointed. The Hogshead can accommodate 36 seated guests or 50 standing guests. The selection of party platters ranges from the more simplistic yet delicious veggies and dips to the more exotic hot Indian savouries, and Oriental Dim Sum. To make your party one to remember there is a house music system which is Internet based. This means there is a large range of tunes available designed to satisfy most tastes throughout the evening. Or, if you prefer, a manual CD system is also available. Theme evenings also come highly recommended. If you've ever fancied seeing your mate dressed as, say, Elvis, or perhaps a long-haired hippy, simply bring the costume to suit and the music is provided. There are free buffets available and no room hire fee.

So whether you come to the Hogshead to sip on it's tasty and varied selection of delicious ales, or perhaps to try and choose from it's tantalising, large menu, or even to host or attend a private party which will never be forgotten, you will not be disappointed.
