Covent Garden London
The heart of London's West End
SAFETY ADVICE FOR HOUSEHOLDERS - FIRES IN THE HOME:
- Never leave a chip pan unattended.
- Never fill a chip pan more than a third full of fat.
- Never throw water on burning fat or oil - cover it with a damp cloth and leave it for at least half an hour.
KITCHEN
- ELECTRICITY
- Remove plugs, which are not being used at night.
- Know the danger signs: fuses blowing, or lights flickering, or brown scorch marks on sockets and plugs.
- Never join two pieces of flex or cable.
- IF YOU SMOKE
- Never smoke in bed, or when you are tired.
- Make sure that ashtrays are emptied and safe last thing at night.
- If you put a cigarette down put it out. Never leave a burning cigarette-not even in an ashtray.
- TAKE CARE WITH PORTABLE HEATERS
- Never put a heater near clothes or furniture.
- Don't let people sit closer than three feet to a heater.
- If you have an electric fire, don't run cable under the carpet or a rug. It could cause a fire by fraying without you noticing.
- SMOKE ALARMS
- Get a smoke alarm- they are cheap and easy to install. They make a piercing sound to alert you to a fire.
- Put it on the ceiling between your living rooms and bedrooms. For advice on purchasing and installing a smoke alarm, ask the Fire Brigade.
- Shut doors at night to stop smoke from spreading.
Remember: smoke kills more often than a fire. Make sure that your alarm is working once a month and change the battery once a year.
- IF YOU HAVE A FIRE:
- GET OUT ! Plan your escape route, and ensure it stays clear.
- GET US OUT ! Call the Fire Brigade by dialling 999.
- STAY OUT ! Never go back until a fire officer tells you it's safe - YOUR LIFE IS WORTH MORE THAN YOUR MOST PRECIOUS BELONGINGS.
