AUGUST 1999 ------------------------------------ Covent Garden NEWS - August 1999 ------------------------------------ >Please feel free to distribute this email on your intranet or network< Dear Friend of Covent Garden Welcome to the August newsletter exclusively about Covent Garden. If you want to find out more about any of the following items or wish to comment on what is happening in the Covent Garden area, please visit http://www.coventgarden.org.uk and discover a wealth of information from the 'locals'. *** U R G E N T request for help *** a disabled Covent Garden resident urgently requires a volunteer to walk his dog on a regular basis!! The dog is a well-behaved Great Dane and the resident's only companion. Dog and owner live in Charing Cross Road. All expenses will be paid for. If you fancy a challenge or know someone who might help, please contact: Bradley Ottaway on tel. 020 7240 6867 - many thanks. This year it is 25 years since the fruit & vegetable and flower markets moved from Covent Garden to Nine Elms, outside central London. You are familiar with the restored Market buildings and the Piazza, but might like to see what the original market looked like in the early 70s. "Goodbye Covent Garden" is a photographic tour of the old market with 32 original pictures so far - begin your tour at http://www.coventgarden.org.uk/gcg/gcg01.html Following the success of our comprehensive listing of food and drink retail outlets, we have produced a listing of all hotels in Covent Garden, together with a list of links to information sites for visitors and residents alike. The list should be on our website by the time you receive this email. Thank you to everyone who used the on-line form on our food and drink pages to tell us what their problems are with the Tesco Metro supermarket in Covent Garden. We have now met with the manager, who is very keen to get more feed-back. After the summer holiday season we will be organising a meeting at which YOU can raise any concerns directly with Paul Siffre, the store manager. We hope to be able to email you with details of the date and venue nearer the time. One of the major events on our social calendar for 1999 is the CGCA benefit concert at St Paul's Church, Covent Garden. The City of Westminster Trio and Jose Maria Guerrero will be performing in a special one-off concert of popular classical music and well-known arias to help raise funds for the Covent Garden Community Association on Sat 25th September at 7.30 pm. Tickets will be reasonably priced and booking will commence soon. We will email you again with full details over the next few weeks. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the various sponsors and supporters who helped with our recent AGM: the Design Council, who hosted the event, Tuttons Brasserie, Maxwell's Restaurants, Los Locos Tejas and Marks & Spencer. Also special thanks must go to Mr Finton O'Toole, the well-known columnist of the Irish Times, who gave a informal and entertaining lecture on Sheridan. You can find more about these and many other items relating to Covent Garden at http://www.coventgarden.org.uk. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- You have received this newsletter by email because you are based in Covent Garden or have shown an interest in Covent Garden.
