JANUARY 1999
Friends of Covent Garden

As you would expect, the CGCA has been busy at the start of 1999. As Covent
Garden continues to be subjected to extraordinary pressure from food, drink
and entertainment uses (and from property developers still trying to make a
quick buck), the area benefits from a ‘watchdog’ organisation to question
the various goings-on in the Covent Garden community. The CGCA, now in its
27th year, remains vigilant and active. We actively seek to make Covent
Garden a better place – to live, work, visit or do business – and believe
that preserving the character and amenity of the area will pay-off for
everyone eventually.

As you may have seen and heard on television and radio recently, we have
continued the ‘battle’ against inappropriate licensing and planning
applications with a potential of being very harmful to local residents. You
find news within the site of recent hearings involving Bass, All Bar One,
The Langley, Detroit and Belushi's. Although these successful ‘battles’ have
been quite high profile, this is just one aspect of the CGCA's work. To
contrast this, we currently manage a one-year outreach worker project among
older, vulnerable people in the Camden part of Covent Garden. We aim to
document the unmet needs of those most in need in our community and to
provide practical help where possible.

You may have noticed that our web site has now moved and is now held at
http://www.coventgarden.org.uk. The CGCA especially thanks Alan Mills at
Venus Internet in Denmark Street for providing the space and registering our
domain name for us.

The site now has many photographs of Covent Garden taken over the Christmas
period – we have some rare photographs ‘snapped’ on Christmas Day of a
lifeless Piazza and an empty James Street! Soon we hope to provide a full
‘virtual photographic stroll’ of Covent Garden and are continuing to develop
the map. If you have interesting photos you'd like us to include, perhaps of
your shop or premises, please contact us and we'll try to accommodate them.

We are also trying to develop a full list of all local business and Coven
Garden related Web sites - just email us your details if you want to be
added to our links page. Please feel free to include our address on your
pages. If you are organising or know of any Covent Garden events, please
inform us as we would be delighted to include the details on our site.

The site itself was featured in the West End Extra on 15th January - have a
look at the rare photograph of the CGCA Web wombles with the article!
