However, we also remember the tragic murder of Diego, a local schoolboy, who was stabbed to death by a paedophile 'friend' at Seven Dials. The incident raised similar issues to those highlighted by the recent murder of Damilola in south London. http://www.coventgarden.org.uk/news/murder_earlham.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - One positive highlight was the talk by Sam Mendes at our Annual General Meeting in the Royal Opera House in June. Founded on 1st April 1971, the organisation is still going strong. A range of events to mark this milestone will be announced early in 2001. Our first event will be a concert of male opera voices on 3rd March in St Paul's Church, Covent Garden. Full details of the program, performers and where to book your tickets will be available at http://www.coventgarden.org.uk in January. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Our celebrations will also be marked with a special exhibition of colour photographs of Covent Garden Market in 1972 by Nigel Dicker. This unique collection shows market people, barrows, buildings, and produce of a working market in what we now know as one of London's top visitor attractions. The full collection can be viewed on our website NOW and a limited edition of each print will be available for on-line ordering from January. http://www.coventgarden.org.uk/gallery/nigel_dicker/index.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you are interested in the history of Covent Garden and want to separate fact from fiction, please read our 'history' article, written by a long-term resident of the area. http://www.coventgarden.org.uk/features/history.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Finally, we wish to thank Liam DelaHunty (http://www.onlinesales.co.uk), our 'information architect', for his superb web-building skills, and also Venus Internet (http://www.venus.co.uk) for hosting this site. Both have given their services completely free-of-charge, and without their help the Covent Garden website would be non-existent. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This newsletter has been sent to you because you have subscribed to it in the past, or because you live, work or have an interest in the Covent Garden area.
