Restaurants Who Flout GM Laws Face £5000 Fine
Restaurants and cafés in Covent Garden could face fines of up to £5,000 if they do not comply with new government regulations compelling them to mark on their menus dishes which contain genetically modified ingredients.
The rules, which were brought in in September, have been introduced because of public concerns expressed over GM foods, even though Whitehall has insisted that they are perfectly safe.
Already, many of the country's big restaurant chains have taken GM ingredients off of their menus and will not have to label any of their food under the new regulations.
However, while the rules refer specifically to ingredients like GM soya and maize, they do not cover derivatives such as oil from GM crops or lecithin made from GM soya. And restaurants will be able to use tomato puree or cheese containing a GM rennet.
Another headache for restaurant proprietors is to ensure that their staff are briefed adequately.
