Covent Garden Combats Crack

POLICE have pledged that Covent Garden should be clear of crack dealers by Christmas.

Supt. Jamie Stephen, Camden borough policing operations director, also hit back over claims that the police had abandoned the area to drug dealers.

"Fighting drug crime remains one of our main objectives. It is very high on the priority list of both us and the council," he said.

He revealed, "We are at the moment undertaking a number of tactics around the borough to tackle drugs crime. And I am hopeful we will see a joint operation with Westminster way before Christmas."

Approaches were being made to local traders over the possibility of funding a CCTV system for the area to help deal with the problem.

This was being put during talks seeking ways to combat the menace which were going on with local voluntary agencies and businesses.

DCI Mike Taylor of West Central Police said that he and DCI Ian West, his opposite number at Holborn, were having discussions over mounting a series of joint operations against drug criminals before Christmas.
